Project Description

Literacy Links is a new adult continuing-education nonprofit serving Virginia Beach and the greater Hampton Roads community. I developed the complete brand identity, designed and built the website, and created a suite of stationery and print materials, giving this first-year organization a clean, approachable presence that builds trust with adult learners, volunteers, and donors alike.

The challenge

Literacy is a quiet but pervasive barrier across Virginia. Nearly one in five Virginia adults has low literacy, and in one of every three Virginia counties, at least one in four residents reads below a basic level—placing the state 26th in the nation.

Literacy Links set out to meet that need in Hampton Roads, but as a brand-new organization they were starting from zero: no identity, no web presence, and no materials to build trust with the community. The challenge was twofold. The brand had to speak to two very different audiences at once—adult learners who might feel vulnerable seeking help, and the volunteers and donors whose support makes the work possible. And it had to do so with the warmth and polish of an established institution, so a first-year nonprofit could earn confidence from the very first impression.

The solution

I built Literacy Links a complete, cohesive identity designed to feel established, approachable, and trustworthy from the start.

The brand centers on a clean, friendly visual system, clear typography, an inviting palette, and imagery that reflects the diverse community it serves—that reads as professional without feeling corporate or intimidating.

The website is organized around the three actions that matter most: become a student, become a volunteer, and give. Each audience has a clear, self-evident path from the homepage, with straightforward navigation and plain, welcoming language that never overwhelms a first-time visitor.

A matching set of stationery and print materials extends the identity offline, giving the organization the polished, consistent presence it needs for outreach, fundraising, and community events.

Together, the system gives Literacy Links a foundation to make a lasting impression in Virginia Beach—and to grow into the institution it aims to become.
